Projects and Case Studies

Green Gears debuted on Saturday March 14, 2009 in downtown Pittsburgh’s St. Patrick’s day parade.
An LLC, Green Gears was started to provide the city alternative solutions for advertising, transportation
and employment.  Co-owner and visionary Paul Kletter thought his hometown
was a great place to start a pedicab company.

Our bicycle rickshaws serviced thousands of locals and visitors all over the Pittsburgh area in 2009.  Being located in the heart of the Southside made it easy for our independent contractors to service Carson Street and Station Square on the weekends.  The North Shore was a hotspot as well with the Pirates, Steelers and Panthers home games.  We also explored areas like the Strip District, Lawrenceville and downtown.

Pedicab-advertising became a very attractive option for companies trying to launch their green initiative in 2009.  Three Rivers Arts Festival was thinking green last year using us to get the word out about the 50th aniversary of their event.  The Sprout Fund then followed their lead using Green Gears to get the Hot House fundraiser event more publicity.  Locally made Boyd and Blair vodka branded the pedicabs during the G20 summit hoping to get some international exposure.  Other notable campaigns included OTB Bicycle Cafe, Botanic Gardens of Western Pennsylvania, Visit Pittsburgh, and Firewater Restoration.

In a time of economic crisis Green Gears was able to create several part-time jobs for motivated individuals who were interested.  An eclectic bunch to say the least, our drivers ranged from a tattooed heavily pierced single mother to a 52 year old insurance salesman who would pedal the bike back to China if I asked him to.  Promoting an independent lifestyle, drivers can make their own schedule renting the bike on a per day or per week basis.

From a concept developed with alot of uncertainty, Green Gears is now a part of Pittsburgh.  Thanks to our hard-working drivers, an open minded market and excellent media coverage, Green Gears has a promising future.
